An Innovative Step Toward Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Yenişehir

At Özyeğin University, we are turning our research on sustainability and climate change into real-world solutions. Our latest project, awarded funding under the European Union–Türkiye Climate Change Grant Program, launches a comprehensive effort to develop climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural models in Yenişehir, Bursa.

The project “Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Farming: Innovative and Cooperative Solutions in Yenişehir,” will run from 2026 to 2028 with a total budget of €464,273. The initiative aims to analyze the effects of climate change on agricultural production using rigorous scientific data and to collaborate with local producers to develop long-term, resilient solutions.

At the heart of the project lies a Digital Decision Support and Early Warning System, which will provide agriculture professionals with data-driven, localized guidance to manage risks such as drought, frost, and extreme weather events. By integrating data science and artificial intelligence into agricultural practices, the system will empower producers to make more accurate and timely decisions.

Co-designed with Yenişehir Municipality and coordinated by the Özyeğin University Sustainability Platform, the project stands out for its innovative ‘Living Lab’ approach. This model brings together experts in academic research, local governance, community empowerment, data-driven decision support systems, and digital infrastructure to co-produce, apply, and continuously refine knowledge directly in the field.

The research team representing Özyeğin University includes Prof. Burcu Balçık, Orkun Doğan, Nevra Bulut, PhD., Assoc. Prof. Ebru Tekin Bilbil, and Murat Bayramoğlu. The project is further strengthened by technical contributions from specialists at the Industry 4.0 Center of Excellence and Digital Transformation, as well as Asst. Prof. Erinç Albey, Mehmet Kültigin Fodul, Gizem Aslantepe and Cevdet Utku Şafak.

Serving as a powerful testament to our commitment to sustainability and interdisciplinary research, the Yenişehir Project seeks not only to develop innovative agricultural models resilient to climate change but also to connect local producers with the opportunities of digital transformation, delivering lasting contributions to regional development.
